Price tells you where.
Time and volume show what it took to get there.
Each PTV brick is built from a fixed number of price ticks—not a volume threshold. See how much time and total traded volume it took to make that price move, directly inside Sierra Chart. The red and blue bid/ask colors are visual context only—not a separate measurement or trading signal.
Same distance. Different story.
PTV bricks are built from price movement—not volume. Each brick requires the market to travel the configured number of ticks (for example, 15 ticks). Until that full price distance is reached, the current brick continues developing; a new brick does not begin. Neither elapsed time nor traded volume can trigger the next brick. PTV shows how much time and total volume it took to complete each move.
The configured move completed quickly. A narrower brick makes the shorter duration visible.
The identical price distance took longer to complete. A wider brick reveals that difference.
Compare the time and total volume it took to make each fixed price move. Two bricks can cover the same number of ticks while requiring very different amounts of time and trading activity.
Price must complete the distance. No exceptions.
Imagine natural gas is configured to form a brick every 8 ticks. If price travels only 5 ticks in two hours and never reaches the full 8-tick threshold, no additional completed brick forms. The current brick continues developing while elapsed time and total volume accumulate. Only the required price movement completes it and allows the next brick to begin.
PTV brings price, time, and total volume into one view.
Price charts show where price moved. Market Profile emphasizes time at price. Footprint charts show executed trading at individual prices. PTV brings price distance, elapsed time, and total volume together for each fixed-tick movement. It adds a distinct perspective; it does not reproduce or replace the other tools.
Price chart
Where did price go?
Tracks price action and structure, usually across time intervals.
Market Profile
Where did price spend time?
Organizes market activity into a time-at-price distribution.
Footprint
Where did trading occur?
Displays traded bid and ask volume at individual prices.
Price–Time–Volume
How much time and total volume did this price move require?
Shows the elapsed time and total volume it took to make each fixed-tick price move. Bid/ask coloring is visual only.
The first three charts are explanatory illustrations. The PTV panel is an actual screenshot.
Understand the display in seconds.
First, the construction rule: each brick represents a fixed number of price ticks—not a fixed amount of volume or time. The market must travel the full allotted tick distance before a new brick can begin. Until then, the current brick remains in development, even if time passes or volume increases. Brick width communicates elapsed time; total volume shows how much traded to complete the price move. Red and blue bid/ask coloring is visual context only, not a separate measured factor or buy/sell signal.
Actual Sierra Chart PTV study. Brick width represents elapsed time. Total volume is the primary volume measurement. Bid/ask colors are visual context only.
Visually distinguishes ask-side trading activity. It is not a separate PTV measurement or bullish signal.
Visually distinguishes bid-side trading activity. It is not a separate PTV measurement or bearish signal.
Less elapsed time to complete the fixed price move.
More elapsed time to complete the same fixed price distance.
Volume associated with price movement outside the brick body.
The total volume it took to make that fixed-tick price move. Read it together with the elapsed time.
How much volume traded per second during the measured move.
The time required to complete each fixed-tick price movement.
PTV measures activity. It does not predict direction.
A narrow brick is not a buy signal. A wide brick is not a sell signal. Higher or lower volume does not automatically indicate bullishness or bearishness. PTV helps you observe the pace and participation behind a price movement. Interpretation and trading decisions remain with the trader.
One fixed price move. More context behind it.
For each fixed-tick brick, see the time and total volume it took to make that price move. Observe completed and developing bricks without confusing the red/blue bid/ask display for a measured signal.
- Fixed price movement bricks
- Time required to complete each brick
- Bid/ask color visualization (not a measured signal)
- Total volume, wick volume, and volume-per-second measurements

Real PTV study values from Sierra Chart, presented alongside an explanation of each measurement.
The total volume it took to make the fixed-tick price move.
The time it took to complete that fixed-tick price move.
The rate of trading activity during the move.
Volume traded in the wick portion of the brick.
Watch a brick develop.
PTV lets traders observe the current brick as it develops. The next brick will not begin until price has traveled the full configured tick distance. Time and total volume continue accumulating during the move, but neither one causes a new brick to form.

Information, not instructions.
A narrow brick is not a buy signal. A wide brick is not a sell signal. Red and blue coloring provides visual bid/ask context; it is not a separate measured input and does not forecast direction. PTV helps you observe market behavior. Your method determines what, if anything, you do with it.

Does PTV replace Market Profile or footprint?
No. Each tool answers a different question. PTV forms bricks from a configured number of price ticks—not a volume threshold—and shows the time and total volume it took to make each move.
Does PTV generate trading signals?
No. Bricks are defined by a fixed number of ticks. Width shows elapsed time; total volume shows how much traded to complete the move. Red and blue bid/ask colors are visual only. None of these elements constitutes a buy, sell, bullish, or bearish signal. PTV does not predict direction or promise trading results.
What software do I need?
PTV is a custom study for Sierra Chart. A compatible Sierra Chart installation is required.
